favorite films

We're going to be starting in on the controversial film project soon and to get us warmed up I always like to ask about favorite films (because who doesn't like to talk about them).  Here's the rule: since most of us could name quite a lot, I'm limiting you to three titles (though I'll let something like the Godfather trilogy count as one title) and you have to give a reason for each title.  As usual, 250 words up by Thursday night and 100 word response up by Sunday night.

  1. It is hard to limit my favorite movies into only three but I think I have made my perfect list. First, The Harry Potter series. This has been an awesome series since I have been a young lad in middle school. The reason these movies really connect with me is because I have read the books and it just makes watching the movie more enjoyable. You actually get a visual from some of your favorite books and that is what really makes these movies special for me. Second, I know this movie is kind of a chick flick but The Holiday has to be a top movie for me. This movie is just a happy movie. Every time I watch it I immediately have a smile on my face. It brings a lot of emotions to the movie and allows you to enjoy it at the same time. Now last but not least, my third choice is Inception. The reason I chose Inception is because in order to truly understand this movie, you have to see it at least twice and then you start to catch what is actually going on. I really enjoy watching a movie and having to think and put things together in my mind to understand it. Another reason that makes this movie amazing is because it leaves you wondering and confused. It does not give you a traditional ending to a movie. It lets you make your own ending up and hope that they make an Inception 2.

  2. There are so many films! How am I supposed to decide which of them are my favorites? Among my favorites though, is the J.R. Tolkien, Lord of the Rings movies. I read the books and then proceeded to see the movies. Unlike the Harry Potter series, the Lord of the Rings series was very well done. Granted, the movies were three hours long, but they had to be to include all of the details that were in the book. I tend to act/be childish sometimes, and thus my second movie among my favorites is the Disney movie, The Road to El Dorado. I watched it about four days ago, and there are so many nuances that I missed as a child. The fact that I recognize them now makes the movie even more enjoyable than it was before. I also believe that it one of the best-done Disney movies, from character development to plot line. Now I know I am only supposed to write about three movies but I am going to stretch the rules a little and say that Inception and Catch Me if You Can top my charts. I put these two movies together because they are both starring one of my favorite actors of all time. Leonardo DiCaprio. Both movies have great intricacies that make them interesting and invigorating. I have always enjoyed movies that have points where if you do not watch the movie twice, you cannot understand it. I could go on and on about my favorite movies, but these four (supposed to be three) top my list.

  3. I must say that three movies is such a difficult number to narrow it down to. Just thinking about the possibilities of my favorite film conjures up about twenty titles I feel could be my favorite film. However, for the sake of this post and the person who would have to read about my twenty favorite movies, I will narrow it down to three. 1) Batman: The Dark Knight. As a child I was a Batman fanatic and I will not lie, I had Batman pajamas fully equipped with a cape. So, naturally a Batman movie that happens to have the most kick-ass fight scenes and a joker that gave me the creeps is in my top three favorite movies. 2) The Usual Suspects. While it is a few years old and I am sure about half the class has never seen it, I highly recommend you see this movie. With a few funny characters and a twist that could never be predicted, the film is one I will never forget. 3) Book of Eli. While it is rather new and I have only seen it twice (unlike the other two films listed), this movie is another one with incredible fight scenes and an ending only a psychic could predict. While I am not very religious myself, I still appreciate this film for all of its elements including the frequently repeated biblical verses (which sound incredibly bad-ass simply because Denzel Washington is saying them). With so many favorites it is difficult to narrow down my absolute top three, but these films I highly recommend.

  4. @Ryan Schindele- Ryan I must say I am a bit shocked that the Holiday made its way into your top three movies of all time. However, you did say the other day that Clash of the Titans was a "Sick-ass movie", so I guess I should have seen it coming. While I am not a Harry Potter fan myself I have seen the first two or three movies and enjoyed them so I see the attraction. Inception I must say, is definitely in my top ten movies of all time. With such an intricate plot and an ending that will always be debated, Inception really is an instant classic.

  5. Movies: one of my favorite things to talk about, but now that we are limited to listing just three, I might have to rethink that. I love watching movies, its one of my favorite things to do. Now, I have to say that inception has to be my favorite movie to watch. First of all, when I first saw this movie, I was very fascinated by how it was created and the thoughts that were presented in the movie. It makes you realize that ideas that you have are possibly planted in your head by a dream. A dream that you might not remember you had, or a dream that you think could represent something significant in your life. I still think that the last part of the movie was all real, but some people like to think otherwise. In addition, my second favorite movie has to be final destination series, all except maybe one of them. If you think about it in depth, it could make you crazy by thinking that those things could happen. I enjoy watching scary movies. I do believe in superstitions, but I’m not the kind of person to think deeply into things that I see in movies, because 98 percent of the time they are plain fiction. But I think the best time of watching scary movies in theatres are hearing other people’s reactions, when they scream and express how terrified they are of what they see (I usually laugh). Lastly, although many would disagree with me, my third favorite movies are the twilight saga. It is very chick flick, I know, but I’m a female, so I think that is a perfectly good excuse. I read the books, so I decided to watch the movies as well. Although the movies are not as great, I still like them. =)

  6. This is probably the hardest thing for me to do because I love to watch movies and have a lot of favorites, so picking my top three is so hard. Well to start off The Departed has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. When I first watched it I loved it, the plot was great with an all-star cast: Nicholson, DiCaprio, Damon, and more. The part that made the movie even better was the ending; it was so mind blowing and bad ass. Just when you thought everything was over with bam a twist happens, then another, it has to be one of my favorite endings of all time. If you have not seen it yet I suggest it, but try to rent it if you can because it is not the same when they play it on TV, well to me at least. Next on the list is Remember the Titans, it is my favorite football and sports movie ever, and has one of my favorite actors Denzel Washington. I have seen this movie so many times but it never gets old, and now when I watch it now, it reminds me of my days playing high school football with the camaraderie with my teammates and being a family. The third movie is what made me think so long for; I kept going back and forth between a couple movies and I figured I should throw a comedy in here, so the winner right now is Step-Brothers. This is my favorite Will Ferrell movie ever and it is my most quoted movie since watching it a numerous times in the past year. I think the Ferrell and Reilly combination in this movie could have not been as good as it was with anyone else; every time I watch it, I still laugh just as much as before. Well for me I can keep going with movies but we can only list three, as of lately I haven’t really been able to see a lot of movies that started coming out around the middle of last summer so feel free to leave any suggestions if you reply.

  7. @ Ryan
I very much love the movie inception myself. However, I would like to point out that the first time I saw the movie, I understood exactly what was going on. (lol) I remember when I was watching that movie, I was so focused that I did not even hear my brother ask me to borrow my phone. I enjoyed examining how every dream was created and how in depth they had to go, just to create a dream that could plant an idea in a man’s head to do what they want him to do. I like Harry Potter series too, but not as much as inception. =)

  8. Some say its hard to list the top three movies, but for me they have and always will be my pics. The first is Spaceballs. Mel Brooks was a comedic genius and yes I do have weak knees for low budget films, but this movie has so many ridiculous puns that even after 72 times watching the movie, its the best one to pick after a long day at work with a beer. It also goes to show that its not the special effects that make the movie, but the actors and the directors working together. The second film for the pick is Brick. For those who didnt see it, the movie is an independent film depicting high schoolers as 40's era gangsters in which one student tries to unravel a mystery over a missing student. My favorite scene from this is when they are discussing a missing 'brick' of drugs at the dealer's kitchen table. The mood that they try to set is a hard boiled drug deal, but is humorously broken by the dealer's mom asking if they wanted milk and cookies. The last movie that has made it to the list is either Pulp Fiction or Rockinrolla, both have very memorable quotes. This would be my favorite scene as the main character describes his situation:

Johnny Quid: You see that pack of Virginia killing sticks on the end
    of the piano?
    Pete: Yes.
Johnny Quid: All you need to know about life is retained in those
four walls. You will notice that one of your personalities is
seduced by the illusions of grandeur - the gold packet of king size
with a regal insignia, an attractive implication towards grandeur
and wealth, the subtle suggestion that cigarettes are indeed your
royal and loyal friends, and that, Pete, is a lie.
Johnny Quid: Your other personality is trying to draw your attention
to the flip side of the discussion, written in boring bold black
and white, its a statement that these neat little soldiers of
death and in fact trying to kill you and that, Pete, is the truth.
Johnny Quid: Oh, beauty is a beguiling call to death and im addicted
to the sweet pitch of its siren.
Johnny Quid: That that starts sweet ends bitter, and that which
    starts bitter ends sweet.
Johnny Quid: That is why you and i love the drugs and that is also
why I cannot give that painting back. now please, pass me a light.
Pete: Oh you are something special, Mr johnny quid.

If anyone gets a chance as well try watching Mulholland Dr. or better yet watch it on shrooms because thats probably how that movie was written and produced.

  9. I think that this is a hard blog assignment just because I can't decide on my favorite films. Personally I love action movies and comedy movies. I know it just recently came out to theaters but it has become a favorite of mine mixing both action and comedy together. The Green Hornet with Seth Rogan and Jay Chou, we all know that when Seth Rogan is in a film its going to be a funny one that everyone will love. Also Jay Chou's role as Kato was very funny because he had comedic moments but also had his ass kicking scenes. The next movie on my list is the latest Harry Potter film. Unlike the others ones trying so hard to force the whole story into the book in one film they decided to split this into two parts. I loved this about it because I loved the 7th book and enjoyed picturing the story in my head. To see it in the film either how I had pictured it or even better is just so entertaining and fun. Also at times I noticed that I saw things I didn't remember from the book and watching the film reminded me. The third film on my list is a french film called Les Choristes. Most people wouldn't like watching a movie in a language they don't fully understand even with subtitles but this movie was so emotional and had such a happy ending. I also liked it because of its music, the main song that they sang was a very peaceful and beautiful song. I've seen Les Choristes four times and each time I grew to love it more and more.

  10. I absolutely love movies so it’s always very difficult for me to decide on which films to choose. Raging Bull is definitely in my top rank of films. I usually love biopics but this one was particularly interesting. It was strange because I am not a fan of boxing but I loved the storyline and the fight scenes. It made me feel as if I was there watching some of the boxing matches and I love De Niro so he was just added icing on the cake. Another one of my favorite movies would have to be Infernal Affairs. Some may not know that The Departed is an Adapted Screenplay from this film. I tend to prefer foreign films so I ventured to watch Infernal Affairs rather than the American version. Although I hate scary movies I am a big fan of thriller films. From what I have heard the storyline is exactly the same in terms of the plot twists so those who have seen The Departed may know what I am referring to. I analyzed this film for a film class I took in high school, which made it even more enjoyable because this way I was able to take in all the film techniques that were used and because i love action/thriller movies it was interesting to see how it varied from other films of the same genre in the US. My favorite genre of film would be action but a close second is comedy films. One of my favorites would have to be Shaolin Soccer not really because of any plots in the film but because of the actors themselves.

  11. Seriously... Only 3 movies? This is the longest I have ever just stared blankly at the comment box without typing anything.
I was never big into watching movies - in fact, the last time I went to the movie theater was when Cloverfield came out (terrible movie, by the way) - but there are some that I've watched and have always left me thinking, which is one of the things a movie would have to have for me to even start to consider it "good". #1 in my list is Fight Club. This movie blew my mind in every single aspect, and no matter how many times I watch it, it will never get old. It encompasses so many aspects of life that to us seem so very important, but they really shouldn't be. It shows what unhappy, pissed-off working-class humans are capable of doing if motivated enough, and how a false sense of elation can send your mind into a perpetual state of delirium. Its intense soundtrack definitely helped make it even more interesting. Overall, its plot was well-developed and the theme behind it was ground-breaking for its time. #2 on my list is a tie (sorry) between the Back to the Future and the Star Wars trilogies. The reason why I put them together (other than I couldn't decide between the two) is because not only do they have really good storylines, but they also give an insight to what writers in the past thought of the future. There are several trends in most futuristic movies, but these two particularly capture most of those supposed aspects of the future and how our lives will (supposedly) be facilitated by machines and robots. Also, they're both really entertaining and awesome. My #3 is something most of you have never even heard of: Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's a musical (just wait, hear me out) about an aspiring villain who lives in New York (I think?), but his attempts to defeat his arch-nemesis, Captain Hammer, always fail, and his quest to win over his crush, Penny. It's quite possibly the greatest musical comedy I have ever seen, mainly because the main character is so awkward, to the point that his attempts to make serious threats become laughable. This movie has great songs, awesome characters, and who said all of our favorite movies had to be serious?

  12. My three favorite movies are the Harry Potter series, The Departed, and a mix between Shutter Island and Inception. I am a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio and that is why I have three of his movies up here as my favorities. I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter films because I read all of the books, so it is "the law" to like the films. Yes, I agree with everybody that says the books are ten times better than the movies, but if you are truly a Harry Potter fan, you will watch the movies. Second, I have the Departed. The main reason why I like this film so much is because of its cast. It casts Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson, and of course, Leonardi DiCaprio. This movie had me jumping out of my seat on every action scene, and the ending had my jaw dropped for at least 30 minutes after I watched the movie because I do not think that anybody expected DiCaprio to die. Third on the list is Shutter Island and Inception. The reason why I cannot pick between the two is because everything is the same except the plot. What I mean is that they are both very suspenseful and you absolutely have to pay attention to every detail in the movie to understand the plot. These movies both have very open-ended conclusions. Shutter Island leaves you thinking whether or not DiCaprio was still crazy or if he acted crazy on purpose due to a quote that he said. " Which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man? " In Inception, the ending closes with the DiCaprio's totem spinning perpetually which means that he should have been in limbo, but the totem took a little stumble before the movie ended so nobody knows.

  13. Well, I'm not really a big movie watcher, mainly because I tend to forget what I watch very easily.. so this might be a bit hard.
Number one for me might have to be Monsters, Inc. I love everything about this movie. I think it's funny, cute, very touching, (I cry every time Sulley has to leave Boo), and I really enjoy watching cartoon movies. Movie number two would be De l'autre côté du lit, a french movie about a couple who switch places for a year. The wife takes her husband's place running his company, and he takes her place doing all the housework, taking care of the kids, and selling jewelry. It's a very comical movie, and the couple realizes that both jobs are just as difficult so everything goes back to normal and they live happily ever after :D .
Movie # three, probably the best out of the other two, is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. The book is absolutely the best, and the movie made it almost come to life. The fact that the main character has this amazing olfactory sense and can make the best perfumes and link everything with a smell fascinates me, I think because I have this weird smell thing going on too. I link smells with places and stuff. What I find more fascinating though is that this guy is almost like addicted to one specific smell, and he's willing to kill for it. (yes, very creepy.)
There are probably better movies I've watched, but I have such a frikin' terrible memory that this assignment has become almost impossible. I had almost forgotten about Perfume! but luckily I had someone to remind me. lol
Oh and by the way, I was watching Inception the other day and I fell asleep. I'm sorry everyone.. I promise I'll watch it again though, when I'm not so sleepy.

  15. If I were to pick three movies out of the innumerable ones that I love, I'd have to pick “Masculin, féminin” by Jean-Luc Godard, “Cool Hand Luke” by Stuart Rosenberg, and “The Great Escape” by John Sturges. “

M-f”, as I’ll refer to it, is, in my opinion, one of Godard’s finest works, and it depicts French cafe culture in the 1960’s as it really was (and which I’m in love with). The film is shot in a series of short interviews, with the characters responding to questions about sex, love, and French politics. The movie follows a non-linear storyline (those are my favorites, like in Pulp Fiction or Last Year in Marienbad). A lot of the film has these jump cuts and non-diegetic inserts (like a cat randomly meowing in the middle of a conversation), which define the French New Wave; these techniques help to break the seamless reality of a film and set apart French movie making from the standard Hollywood films of the 60’s.

“Cool Hand Luke” is the most badass anti-authority movie I have ever seen, and Paul Newman’s “fuck you” anti-hero, loner attitude pretty much drives the whole movie for me. The film reflects a lot of the U.S. counter-culture and social unrest of the 60’s (hence the whole anti-authority part) and I like it so much particularly because I myself am anti-authority, and because Paul Newman’s is one of the coolest dudes to have ever graced this Earth.

What can be said about “The Great Escape” that hasn’t been said already? Aside from having one of the most awesome casting jobs ever, “The Great Escape” is one of the greatest war movies ever made, and, as its name suggests, is about the POW escape from Stalag Luft III, a prison camp for RAF/USAAF pilots and servicemen, in Poland. The films main star, Steve McQueen is the number one coolest dude to have ever graced this Earth, doing his own stunts and motorcycle driving for the movie (and he did his own stunts and driving for pretty much every movie he ever starred in). It follows in the same vein as Cool Hand Luke, with a very anti-authority plot, but this time they’re giving a big finger to the Nazis.

  16. I absolutely love movies, so making a list of my favorites is a very easy task; limiting he list to three is not so simple. To start, Inglorious Basterds, as yes that is the correct spelling of the title, is by far my favorite. I usually am not a fan of Taxation, but I believe this film was amazing. The same goes for Brad Pitt, however I think he played his character, Aldo Raine very well. I can watch this satire numerous times, and find the humor just as funny as the first time I saw Inglorious Basterds. My second favorite movie is the classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. There are very few movies that I like as well as the book. I think the movie is witty and was the first time the taboo subject of prostitution was really spoken about during this time. Even though it was a controversial role, Holly Golightly is a character I can relate to, and it is clear that many other people felt this way. Last, I would choose An Education as my third favorite movie. Most coming of age stories, I do not find as intriguing as this one. Between the charming older man the character, Jenny meets and the seducing life he introduces her to, I find it hard to not find this movie appealing. Another reason I would consider this a favorite is that it does not have the perfect, happy ending. There are only so many times everything works like a fairy tale, so the movies that do not, are more relatable.

  17. To reiterate what everyone else has said, it’s really hard to pick three favorite movies, but I can think of a few that stick out. First, The Departed. What a phenomenal movie, Martin Scorsese’s best film. Anyone that didn’t see that movie, is making a huge mistake, and if you did see it, and your mouth didn’t drop at the end, you did something wrong. I cannot think of a more power packed cast including, Nicholson, Damon, DiCaprio, Sheen, Wahlberg, and Baldwin. The screenplay was well written, it was action packed, and the twist at the end was epic. I have no doubt that was my number one. I would have to pick the original Batman for my second favorite. I grew up down the street from Michael Keaton, and I have loved that movie for my entire life. I would be willing to say Jack Nicolson played a better Joker than Heath Ledger any day. That film really set the stage for Batman, and I loved how director, Tim Burton, used that dark edge to create the environment. I also believe Michael Keaton played Batman very well, especially since he didn’t grunt like Christian Bale every time he spoke. My third choice is very difficult. Although I love a lot of movies, I would definitely like to mention GoodFellas. What a film. Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Bob De Niro all did a fantastic job personifying a mobster, it was really impressive. In addition, Goodfellas had some amazing music.

First off, I totally have to agree with you when it comes to fight club. It is, quite possibly, one of my favorite movies too. Its character development astounded me! I was perplexed until the end when everything (kind-of) fell into place. Great movie choice! I also have to agree with you on the Back to the Future and Star wars trilogies. Both of them are absolutely amazing movies. (Although Back to the future 1 was the best out of that trilogy.) Overall I would have to say that I agree with you choices and I approve... (except for the last one, of which I have never seen, so I cannot comment on it...)

  19. Ah movies, the perfect way to kill time and just relax. There are so many movies I don't know where to start. Hm, well Cruel Intentions was a great movie! The writing was brilliant. What a different way of having a romance film. What surprised me was the ending because the main character dies and loses the chance o being with his lover after his step sister tries to sabotage their relationship over a bet. Whats next, this movie I would never mind watching over and over again was The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger was the best Joker ever and no I'm not just saying that because he passed away. His character attracted me to movie, it was amazing how he committed to this odd, creepy, and sick character. "Why so serious?" love it! Finally The Crow! yes I said it that movie was awsome! Ex rock star comes back from the dead to avenge his wife and his own murder, what is not to love? I find it weird that the actor who played the Crow also passed away while making the film. Anyways thats off topic. Those are my top three for now. They are always changing. Even though my films seems to be dark and odd, the only reason why I like the films is because they are not your typical movies with a cookie cutter happy ending. the movies are completely fiction but in a way has a bit of reality in them. Plus the actors kick ass! Later (:

Two out of the three you listed for your favorites I would agree on your viewpoint of the films. Step Brothers is probably the greatest film that he has made in his career, and with that, is highly quotable. "Okay, here's the shot out of the cannon: Oprah, Barbara Walters, your wife. You gotta fuck one, marry one, kill one, go!" I didn't really like the ending where they both fill in for the band but its better than Blades of Glory. So with that I turn to the Departed. Another great choice. Awesome film about the Providence Mob, but I cant stomach it any more since I lived in both of those cities.

  21. There are many great movies out there and 2 of my choices of 3 are movies that everyone enjoys. I picked these movies because 1, I love movies that make you think and reflect a lot about life and teach you a lesson. My first choice is obviously the Star Wars saga. I remember when I was a little kid and my dad was watching Star Wars on the T.V. and I was just in awe. It was different from every movie out there. It was one of a kind. A masterpiece in itself. Granted, many people say the last 3 movies were the worst out of the 6, but I deeply enjoyed RoTS. There was one scene with Anakin that moved me completely. I also picked this movie because the music compositions are phenomenal. Instantly when you hear the music you know it's Star Wars. My second favorite movie(s)would have to be Harry Potter. When I was in Middle School, I remember reading the books and I really enjoyed them. Watching the movies and seeing the books come to life was very pleasing and enjoyable. Plus the music is great as well, along with the acting. I like how both Star Wars/Harry Potter have serious scenes, but then can shift towards a comical scene here and there. Last but not least, a movie that I recently watched that I enjoyed was RED. Some of the scenes in the movie are just downright hilarious. The acting is great and I like how they mix together action/comedy.

  22. Since I enjoy spending my time in front of the TV or laptop watching movies a lot, it is very difficult for me to choose three films as my favorites. Dozens of names come to mind when I think of favorites. So, to make it easier for me, I’m going to narrow it down to my favorite three films of 2010. My first choice would have to be the French film, A Prophet. It is just one of the best films I have seen in my life, it depicts the life of a recently incarcerated young adult of Arab descent, and how he deals with the increasing racial division inside the prison. The film shows the growth of a 19 year-old Arab in the prison world, from being the new inmate to becoming the right-hand of the leader of the Corsican gang, the rivals of the Arabs. My second choice is True Grit. I don’t usually like paying for tickets but this movie was worth it. Western is one of my favorite genres, and I believe the Coen brothers did an excellent work in presenting the audience the true essence of a western film. Plus, this is the only movie directed by them that I actually enjoyed and understood. My third favorite movie of 2010 has to be The Social Network. It is simply the best film of the year. Although it is a work of fiction, and I understand that it did not happen like that, I still think the story is fantastic. The script gives such a sense of reality that a lot people believe that Mark Zuckerberg is an “asshole,” and fired his best friend. I have to congratulate Aaron Sorkin for doing such a great job in the writing of the script.

  23. @Dustin. I have to say that you have a very good taste in movies. Martin Scorsese is my favorite director, and two of your movies are in my top 20 of all-time favorites. I have to agree with you that the ending to The Departed is one of the best I have seen in my life, and that the cast of was pretty cool. I congratulate you for including Goodfellas in your list. I believe that it is the greatest gangster movie ever made, even better than The Godfather. I will always remember the scene when Joe Pesci asks Ray Liotta “What do you mean I’m funny?”

  24. There may be a vast variety of movies in the world but my all time favorite would have to be Surf’s Up because I am highly obsessed with penguins. They are my favorite animals in the world and I even have a collection of more than 100 stuffed toy penguins, including decorations, in my room back home in Jacksonville. I love it so much because it has a nice story, I think the characters are very cute, and I love Shia LaBeouf’s voice. Another one of my favorite movies would have to be from France called The Valet, a French comedy where a valet driver has to pretend to go out with a supermodel due to complicated circumstances with the model’s secret lover. There is a lot of humor, irony, drama, and romance which are my favorite combinations in a movie and for the people who have not seen this I highly recommend it for people who love comedy. I also love the movie White Chicks because it is the one movie where I do not mind watching it more than 10 times a week because it kept on playing on Encore for the longest time. Every time it played, I cannot help but laugh at every moment of humor even though I have seen it so many times already. The movie would never get old for me and every time I hear the song A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton, I would think of the movie White Chicks.

  25. Movies are great, and I actually enjoy a lot of them. It is very hard to pick a favorite movie because I watch a lot of movies, but my three favorite movies would have to be Dil To Pagal Hai,Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and The Hangover. Among the few I like, there is one of from my native land. Its called Dil To Pagal Hai. It came out 1997, I was 5 years when it came. It had my favorite actor, Shahrukh khan. He is a famous actor in India. It is about a guy is a choreographer, and he has an image of the his perfect girl. He meets the girl and they fall in love but the girl already has a fiancée. The fiancée eventually realizes and lets them be together. My other favorite movies are Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Hangover. My favorite actor is Brad Pitt. He is very good looking and handsome, even though he may be old. I like that movie because it shows the meaning of true love. The movie was about two people who are spies, and fall in love. They are married, but the other does not that the other one is a spy, their love is more valuable than their work. The Hangover was a very funny movie and my favorite scene was when they found out they had a tiger in their house. All together all three movies are my favorite so far.

  26. For an extreme movie connoisseur like me, this blog post is probably the most difficult one so far. On my “about me” column on Facebook my preferences for favorite movies just says “Anything with Will Smith” but for the purposes of this assignment I’ll choose I,Robot. I love this movie, mostly because Will Smith is in it, but also because of the message it sends. In this day and age when life is solely based on technology this movie gives an example of how too much dependency can ruin our lives. This movie is also my favorite because it mirrors the morals in some of my favorite books such as Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. My second favorite movie, which is typical for an African American female, is the Color Purple. This movie is dear to me, again, because of the many messages it sends. Firstly it builds a connection between different races of women through the motif present in most works of literature or film which is a woman’s downfall due to a male dominant society that won’t allow her to express herself, like the book the Awakening. It also shows the significance of inner beauty and the tremendous strength that authentic, unconditional love has. My last and most recent favorite movie is Avatar. The time and effort put into this movie is ridiculous. The entire Pandora was amazing from the insects to the animals to the plants. The movie made me want to be an avatar because the people were so based and involved around their community, our opposites. The love that I have for this movie is solely based around its connection with the whole Africa being raped thing and its association with one of my favorite books Heart of Darkness.

  27. I have seen many movies in my life and having to choose only my top three is very hard but after about an hour of thinking I think I have narrowed them down. To start off number three on my list is the movie 300. Some of the reasons why I enjoy this movie are because of all the nonstop action, and the interesting storyline which kept me entertained throughout the whole movie. Movie number two on my list is Blood in Blood out. This movie does not rely on many special effects or animation to make it better but instead uses a very good acting and an interesting storyline to keep all the viewers entertained, which I think many of today’s movies lack. Finally my all-time favorite movie to watch is Scarface (1983 version). No matter how many times I have watched this movie I have never gotten bored of it. The main reasons why I chose these movies as my top three is because they use very interesting and original storylines that do not require a sequel to make them better and because the ending of these movies cannot be predicted very well which keeps you hooked to the screen the whole time. I think that no matter how many movies I watch, Scarface and Blood in Blood out will always remain as my top two favorite movies of all time because i made a lot of good memories watching these movies with my friends and family as I was growing up.

  28. @Paula Though I too am a lover of penguins I have not seen Surf's Up. Penguins are just a fun animal to talk about. As my roommate said “Penguins are different, they're classy they wear tuxedos!” I can't say that I have as many penguin decorations, or any for that matter but I have a giant penguin costume that I occasionally wear. Once again I can't relate to this movie because I haven't seen it but I do love French culture and any comedy because it is my favorite genre. And finally a movie that I've seen, White Chicks. Anything with the Wayans brothers are always funny. I'm a big fan of their show and movies.

  29. @Paula:
White Chicks is one of the funniest movies I've watched. Just the fact that these two guys are impersonating two rich girls is hilarious. I mean, they obviously DO NOT look like them.. at all. Everything they have to do to appear like these chicks is insanely funny, and it's something you don't see very often in movies. And let's not forget the spying wife and her friend, representing the jealous wife and the annoying friend. Another great thing about the movie is that through their experience these guys learned to appreciate things in their lives that they never had before.

I will definitely have to agree with you on your two top favorite movies. Scarface is an absolute classic, and you described it perfectly. It doesn't need a sequel because that ending to it is great enough. 300 is also a great movie, non-stop action and you just want to see what happens next. I do think that they had some corny scenes in there but other than that, it was a great movie. Well done on your top three movies because they are all very good choices.

I agree with you, I love the Hangover as well. It is one of my favorite movies because of the crazy antics that happened in it. I also love the scene where they found a tiger in a room and I love how they tried to get it the tiger out of the hotel. As for Dil To Pagal, I never heard of it but it does sound very interesting and Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a good movie too. I agree that Brad Pitt is a good looking guy despite his age but overall it was a good action movie.

I feel that the earlier half of the saga was much better developed than the latest half, but the thing is this: no matter which half people like the best (for whatever reason), it's the order in which they were made that makes Star Wars such a unique saga. Telling the last half of a story first, then later explaining its roots is a very good way of keeping the viewers hooked. "This was a great movie, I wonder how all of this happened and why there are so many things mentioned that we don't know about..." and then the later half comes along. I may not be conveying my thoughts correctly at the moment due to sleep deprivation.
I think a good chunk of the population outgrew Harry Potter. It was awesome when it was right at the middle, when we were all in like... 5th or 6th grade, but things like that tend to get old, especially the longer they become. Yes, it's a great story and all, but the movies (especially the later ones) just killed the entire thing for me. The latest movie felt more like Twilight to me, even the music in the background.

Yes, I definitely would agree with you about the earlier half of the saga. Even after watching the 3 prequels, the first 3 movies, even though they were made in the late 70's-early 80's, I still enjoy them. One thing I do love about the prequels though is because of the improved technology and filming, I really thought it made the overall movie better. I loved how the story was told as well. It is a unique way of storytelling and it is definitely out of the box. When I was a kid I loved Harry Potter, I don't know, I guess it has kind of grown on me a little bit. I actually haven't seen Deathly Hollows Part One, I'm a little skeptical, but eventually I will see it. Don't even mention to me about Twilight. I would rather kill myself. One of my friends showed me a trailer of it awhile ago (I've never read the books, nor have seen any of the movies, or have anything associated with it) and I didn't even think it was a movie because the acting was so boring and bad.

I think you have a fantastic taste in movies. All of these were very good choices. Although Will Ferrell has many good movies, Step brothers was by the far the greatest. Like you, I laugh every single time I watch this movie. Ferrell and Reilly were funny in Talladega Nights but Step brothers take the cake. Literally everything about this movie was hilarious. The Departed was also a great movie. The movie does star many big names and any movie with DiCaprio in it, gets my vote. I am also a huge fan of Denzel Washington. Remember the Titans has been one of my favorite movies since I was young. Although, inspiring sport movies, are usually pretty good, I sometime find them on the cheesy cliché side. Remember the Titans started the inspiring movie trend and it was a very touching movie.

  35. @Ed,
Good choices. Everyone has to love the Star Wars Saga, it’s an American institution. I can understand what you mean by saying that series makes you think. The technology they used to make that movie possible was really impressive, and it’s interesting to ponder what type of advancements we could see in technology in the near future. Although I’m not a fan of the Harry Potter series, I was interested to see you mention the movie Red. Bruce Willis is one of my favorite actors, and I would really like to see that film since it’s relatively new.

I like all the movies you put up as your favorites. First of all the Harry Potter series is the best thing that happened. I love those movies, and I agree with you about the books, they are way better than the movies. Inception is an ok movie, but i liked Shutter Island better, it had some really good scenes. The plit of the story was the crazy part throughout the movie. The Departed is a great movie, and the thing is I really like Leanardo DiCaprio. I think he is an amazing actor.

Yes!! You have gained cool points for liking the Dark Knight..That movie is not a classic but I love how they used a classic hero. The Joker was creepy, it was brilliant acting. I don't think I watched the Usual Suspect, I wish you would of gave a brief explanation what the movie was about. But maybe one day I will get a chance to watch the movie. The Book of Eli was a great movie too. I'm not too big on violence but the movie was a great story. It was great how they tried to bring religion in the movie. The twist in the ending was mind blowing because in the end it all made sense and made me really think about the story.

  38. @TTroyer I have to agree picking only 3 movies is pretty hard to do but I do agree with 2 of your movies. The Dark Knight is up there for me. It has some of the best acting I have ever witnessed. It is very suspenseful the entire time and even though it is almost a 3 hour movie, it keeps your interested for the entire movie. Your second choice I am not too sure about only due to the fact that I have not seen it. You do consider it a very good movie so if I get a chance to watch it, I certainly will. Your last movie I could not agree more. The Book of Eli was a great movie. For the most party having Denzel Washington really made the movie. He is one of my favorite actors and out did himself in this film.

  39. @Hubbacraft: Spaceballs is probably one of my favorite movies too. Anything Mel Brooks does is hilarious; I’m pretty sure he could read the phonebook and I’d laugh my ass off. My two favorite scenes of the movie are when they put the VHS tape to see what happens next and they have that whole dialogue; and when President Skroobs tells them to comb the desert… “WE AIN’T FOUND SHEET!” I laughed so hard. Pulp Fiction… All I have to say about Pulp Fiction is that I have seen it at least 60 times over, and the part where Jules stabs Mia in the chest with the adrenaline shot still makes me all anxious…

I've only seen 2 of your three, 300 and Scarface. Just like you Scarface is one of my favorite movies, but being able to list only three I decided to put The Departed on here (it was a hard choice). This is my favorite Al Pacino movie of all time and I remember watching it all the time after I bought it. 300 is also a great movie, not in my top 10. I never heard of the Battle of Thermopylae before the movie but then I started reading up on it and winded up doing a history project on it comparing the movie to actual recorded events, they were pretty similar except the movie just exaggerates the Persian army, but then again that’s Hollywood for you.

I agree with you and everyone else in the class that picking out only three of your favorite movies is a hard task. Out of your top three movies that you chose Remember the Titans and Step Brothers are among my favorite of all time. The only reason that the departed isn’t is because I have never watched it but after reading your summary on it I guess that I will have to. Remember the Titans is probably the best football movie I have ever seen, it also reminded me of when I played high school football and how no matter what happened you would still see your teammates as family.

  42. @eric: The fact that you included a Disney movie makes me and you new best friends. I love Disney cartoon movies but I must admit I haven’t seen the road to El Dorado. Sometimes I feel like I’m one of the few that enjoy a good cartoon because some people dismiss creativity when they hear it’s a cartoon and it should be only for children. The Lord of the Ring movies are cool too but they were too long for my taste. They were nice but I would never want to watch them ever again.
