55 Word Stories

I'm bringing back an old favorite from last semester (and if you did this last semester, you cannot reuse your old story): I'm including a link below to a website that publishes stories of exactly 55 words.  Read a few of them, and then you have one of two choices: a.) do a standard 250 word post discussing the stories or b.) try writing a 55 word story of your own.  The rules for a 55 word story: 1.) I will be checking to make sure it is exactly 55 words (otherwise, it wouldn't be a 55 word story), 2.) you can title it, but it doesn't count towards the 55 words, and 3.) there are no restrictions on content, but keep in mind this is a public forum, so exercise common sense.

Whichever option you choose, I'll give you until Sunday night (03/06) to get it done.  You only have to do one post this week because of conferences.

  1. I smoke a cigarette.

    Jen joins me.
    We are both heavily drunk.
She says something about really wanting to fuck me.

    I shrug.

She asks me why I have a girlfriend.

I laugh and do not respond.

She says that it is because of people like me that people like her are alone.
    She leaves.

  2. My new used car

Driving down 44 with a mile to go to the exit for home. Testing the car that is now all mine but to my dismay, halfway off that ramp the car shuttered and popped to a stop. Searching for a reason, the answer, my gas tank, took another exit into the brush. Now I walk.

  3. Date?
We are only going out for coffee, there is nothing new going on. I mean he has only been my best friend for five years, why would I risk losing something special, I bet he will mention that one girl from work. Shit. What if he realizes that it bothers me? Phone rings, dinner instead? (:

  4. I found the meaning of life once.
It was staring me right at the face.
    After thinking for a moment,
I realized how fortunate I was to realize it right then.
I laughed as he said: "Don't waste your life wondering,
Enjoy all of the things you have left."
Nothing better could have been said.

(I did another one because the first seemed too much like poetry)

I tripped over my own shoelaces while walking through the woods and fell into a deep underground cave. As the hours went by, I could only think of everything I never accomplished. After I got out, I told everyone I knew: "Enjoy all the little things in life, live like you won't wake up tomorrow."

  5. She walked into the dark hall.
The music was so loud it shook her whole body. Entering a room of fluorescents and moving figures.

The bass was the heartbeat of the room.
Every person responded to the pulse, waiting for the drop.
Bunnies and gloves were at every direction.

Who is this person touching me?

  6. The feel of the ball in my hands as I look down to see where the line is. My feet only inches behind the line I can feel the clock ticking down. One final shot can win it all and joyous celebration will ensue. The shot goes up... clang... it is over. My career finished.

  7. It is down to this, nothing more. My final game, there will be no more. I walk off the field, look up one more time. As my dad says you will be fine. I take off my cleats throw them down, wishing I would be the one who was crowned. It's now up to me.

  8. Snow falls lightly in the winter morning. I get dressed and leave my house. Snow gear and hot chocolate in my hand. I walk to the hill. I ready myself on my sled and finish my warm drink. Pushed by the wind, I fly swiftly to the bottom. Sheer excitement, yet another perfect winter day.

  10. Pull up to the show.
    The nervousness is setting in.
I feel like nothing can stop me though.

I step up on stage once I hear that it is our turn to perform.
All of the focus is on us now.
Our first song begins to play.

    It’s time to prove myself.
    Here we go!

  11. The dark sky sparkles within his eyes; the beauty that I see reflects his love for me. But I wondered, is it true? Can a person’s gaze capture their feelings for someone? I wasn't sure that I should ask, but the words left my mouth before I thought not to. Do you truly love me?

  13. The world slowly unfurls
    like the wisps of smoke
    from her cigarette;
    I am invisible, I listen
    to the prophecies
    we all spew. And
I laugh, and I long for
    the silver sands of the
    moon. We all need time
    to be ourselves; we all
    need time to be our
    shadows, alone in
    the sunlight.

  14. Now I’m moving away. Who would have thought this is what I means to be on your own. Pouring alcohol down your throat. Holding the past in your palm as you wash away what it once meant to be you. The cat is ready to be fed. He knows who I really am. He knows.

  15. I am aging every day.
    I wake every morning.
    Ready to better myself.
    I think about my life.
    How it’s passing me by.
    I think about my life.
All of the memories I have made.
    I think about my life.
All of the achievements I have made.
    People die and age.
    Your memories are eternal.

  16. Racing in the pool, nothing but bubbles in front of me. I turn to my left to see my opponent ahead. I see our goal inching closer and closer as I swim harder and harder. He is getting closer as I speed up. The wall is in my reach and I touch. I am victorious.

  17. Everyone rushes to the table, the food is arriving from the kitchen. Let’s make a toast. Uncle wants to toast to cousin winning his game. Mom wants to toast to loosing weight. Sister wants to toast to having her new car. Dad’s mouth is occupied. I say, let’s toast to finally having our family together.

  18. I need to find myself something to do. I am bored and need to find something to do. I turned on the TV, nothing to watch. I logged into Facebook, nobody to talk to. I called my friends, nobody picked up. I texted her, she didn’t text back. Maybe I’ll just go for a run.

  19. Music

The bass beats, the beats drop, the rhythm gives us chills. Some say it kills and cause some to get aggressive. It makes us restless. We love it; it’s how we express ourselves. It comforts, it livens, and it never gets old. It saves souls, it is better than gold. It’s love without the pain.

If that was too poetic here’s another

    Beehive

I couldn’t help but notice the bee that had been hanging outside my window. He visited everyday until his honey comb became a giant beehive with nest for the young and colonies for the others. Sadly, the hive became too much and “the man” had to knocked it down. Again, life was neglected and rejected.

  20. So my friend sent me a link on facebook and told me to look at it. I clicked it and winding up getting Rick Rolled. Listening to the song because it’s good, then I click close and it won’t. Call my friend and cruse him out, then I copy and paste and send to more.

  21. There was a princess named Reeree who lived in a kingdom called Okatoba. Her parents recently died so her evil aunt and uncle looked after her but they treated her like a prisoner and locked her away in a tower. They kept her in that tower for weeks until her prince came to the rescue.

  22. Yearning to hear the music again, I stand alone in a room looking out the window. Outside I see the kids playing the soft melodies. My hands as cold as ice, I wait until the kids come back to the room, so I may join them in music with my clarinet sitting on the ground.

  23. My final play
Drenched in sweat and blood while water drips onto my helmet, I clench the football and wait. Everything comes down to this final play. The command is given and the ball is snapped I watch as it is thrown and then bounced around in the receiver’s hands only to be struck down, ending the game.
